Literature Look: My Notorious Life

Today’s post includes my review of the novel, My Notorious Life by Kate Manning with looks inspired by the book…

Incredibly rich and vividly detailed, My Notorious Life tells the story of controversial heroine, Axie Muldoon, as she rises from impoverished immigrant child to one of the wealthiest women in Victorian New York Society. While the choices that brought Axie to riches are not for the faint-of-heart, her story is an accurate portrait of the hard choices forced upon women of the era and sheds light on similar women’s issues of today.

Though Axie Muldoon’s character was inspired by a real woman, My Notorious Life can best be described as a historical fiction with elements of mystery, family drama, and women’s interest. While some parts might be hard to stomach for some, it is brilliantly written, utterly engaging, and an overall entertaining read.

 Audiobook review from Audible:

For almost 20 hours of narration, My Notorious Life gives you a lot of bang for your buck. The reader, Terry Donnelly, was very good overall and did a fine job of distinguishing a variety of characters of different genders, ages, and accents. While her read for Axie stays at a somewhat angry inflection, I imagine that is accurate for the portrayal of her character.
